For our first article, we’re starting with one of the most fundamental connections between rider and motorcycle:

Throttle control.

For most motorcyclists, throttle control means one thing: twisting the right-hand grip.

It’s a system riders become so accustomed to that we barely think about it. Twist the throttle, increase the input. Roll it back, reduce it.

But what if there was another way?

The Racetorx RTX758 Thumb Throttle provides an alternative method of controlling a conventional motorcycle throttle, allowing the rider to use an adjustable thumb-operated paddle while retaining rotational throttle actuation.

It’s a different approach to one of the most familiar controls on a motorcycle.

What is a motorcycle thumb throttle?

A motorcycle thumb throttle allows the rider to operate the throttle using a thumb-operated paddle rather than relying solely on the conventional twisting action of the grip.

Thumb-operated throttles will already be familiar to riders from ATVs and other vehicles, but adapting the concept to a motorcycle presents a different engineering challenge.

That’s where the Racetorx approach comes in.

How does the Racetorx Thumb Throttle work?

The principle behind the RTX758 is deliberately straightforward.

The rider operates the adjustable thumb paddle, which creates rotational input through the throttle mechanism.

Rather than functioning as a simple on/off control, the system allows the rider to progressively operate the throttle using their thumb.

The paddle position can also be adjusted to suit the rider’s preferred setup and ergonomics.

This allows the control position to be tailored around the rider rather than forcing every rider to use exactly the same paddle position.

Why use a thumb throttle on a motorcycle?

There isn’t one single answer.

Different riders, motorcycles and riding disciplines have different requirements.

For some riders, a thumb throttle is about creating a different control and ergonomic setup.

For others, it’s about configuring the motorcycle around a particular riding discipline, physical requirement or personal preference.

And for some, it’s simply about exploring an alternative to the traditional twist-throttle arrangement.

The RTX758 has been developed with broad motorcycle compatibility in mind, making it relevant across a range of potential road, race, supermoto and off-road applications.

That adaptability is important.

A different approach to thumb-throttle conversion

One of the important features of the RaceTorx system is what you don’t need to completely redesign.

The RTX758 is designed to fit over the OEM throttle tube after the existing tube has been shortened by approximately 75%.

The Racetorx assembly then slides over the remaining section and is secured using its clamp.

Racetorx recommends using 22mm ATV-style grips on both sides to create a consistent bar setup.

The conversion doesn’t require a completely new throttle housing or a wholesale rebuild of the motorcycle’s switchgear.

The philosophy is simple:

Work intelligently with the existing throttle system rather than unnecessarily replacing everything around it.

Motorcycle controls are personal.

However, motorcycle controls are safety-critical components.
